Five-Star Rated Green Home Design: Austin, TX

At 1,648 square feet, this infill home makes the case that square footage isn’t the point. Designed for a family of four, it borrows the scale of the 1950s homes nearby while pushing further on efficiency: a variable-speed HVAC system, no-VOC paints, and LED lighting throughout keep it running lean year-round. Clerestory windows and deep overhangs manage light and heat without adding mechanical load. The Austin Energy Green Building program rated it five stars; the Home Builders Association followed with two 2013 MAX Awards, for Best Product Design and Best Green Home.
