This Austin Residence came to Smith Holt as a puzzle. The home had accumulated additions over the years, leaving a hodgepodge of configurations that read as disconnected from the street and from each other. With no direct client to answer to, the firm had the freedom to resolve the design on its own terms, integrating the varied elements into a single cohesive whole. The concept centered on bringing the outdoors in, using materials and spatial transitions to blur the boundary between inside and out. Deep overhangs, durable HardiPlank siding, a tankless water heater, and a sealed combustion gas fireplace rounded out a renovation that earned a five-star rating under the Austin Energy Green Building program.
