Sustainable Home Addition and Renovation: Austin, TX

In a neighborhood built in the 1950s, the easiest choice would have been demolition. The Smith Holt team made a different call, preserving the original structure and weaving a thoughtful addition around it that respects both the surrounding streetscape and the principles of green building. The new construction introduced an insulated concrete form wall system, a 1.8-kilowatt photovoltaic array, a standing-seam metal roof, and bio-based spray insulation, while reclaimed lumber from the demolished portion of the existing home found new life as trim and framing throughout. Large overhangs, minimal west-facing glazing, and no-VOC finishes complete a home that wears its sustainability quietly. The result earned a five-star rating under the Austin Energy Green Building program.
